There was a time when I believed dreams were nothing more than recycled mind junk, fragments of thought replayed at night. Then, one winter, everything changed.
I felt called to visit a wild place: a long, narrow island between two rivers, the only untouched land at the edge of my city. The canals meet there, and even the bridge that leads across is rusty and broken, more to be climbed than walked.
That night I decided to sleep outside. It was right after the first “lucid dreaming training” I had ever attended. I walked to the far end of the island, where I knew a small hut stood. This time the hut was empty, except for a tiny, ancient iron stove. I spread out my mat and sleeping bag, lit the fire, and watched the room glow as the darkness settled. The stove worked beautifully.
Before sleep came, something strange moved through me, almost as if I were in a trance. I wrote on the wall:
“If you wake up in a parallel reality, use this code to return.”
Then I drew a circle and marked it where the ten o’clock would be on a clock face. I didn’t know why I wrote it, only that it had to be done.
I fell asleep… and without realizing, I woke up in the same hut, in the same place, only slightly different. The island seemed larger, more magical. There were animals around me, an elephant even, and I found myself waiting for a bus.
There, I met a person who delivered a teaching so profound that it changed my life. I later met this person in waking life.
To return, I remembered the code. It was not really a code but a map. I stood inside a great circle, found the mark at ten o’clock, and walked the path that opened. As I walked, I awoke, back in the hut, the fire reduced to its last glowing branches.
This is what I want to share with you: the art of merging realities, of remembering what we once forgot, of no longer treating the dream as separate from the waking. >
